Wedding Wednesday: Engagement Photos - Part II

Welcome back to part II of our engagement photo series. (You can see part one here and our photographer's favorites here). This entire set was inspired by this photo of Carrie & Big. When I showed it to our photographer Allie, she immediately suggested the W Hotel in Hollywood. It was the perfect location! The entire place is covered in red carpeting with a huge spiral staircase in the lobby. It couldn’t have been anymore ideal for our vision. However, much to my dismay, when I called the hotel to inquire, I was told we had to apply and pay a fee to use the property. The application process takes about a week but we were leaving for LA in few days. We had such short notice we knew it was not possible and didn’t want to chance it, nor did we want to pay the sizable fee! Luckily for us, Allie and Brian were able to find us a second location at the Vibiana. From the numerous times I’ve stalked Callaway Gable's blog, I knew exactly what it looked like. It’s a beautiful old church with amazing architectural details. I couldn’t be happier with our second choice!
Originally I wanted to use this gold dress for the Carrie and Big “vision” shot. However, since we were no longer doing it at the W, I wanted to capture the essences of the photo by using the color red. It was also the perfect color to contrast against the dark floor. With only a few days before our trip, I was frantically searching for the perfect red dress. I knew my chances of finding it was slim so I made my own. It took me about two days to complete but would have been one day if I had a mannequin! (Still looking for one if anyone knows where I can get it cheap.) The only mistake I made was that I didn't finish the seams on the flower pin, leaving a trail of red strings everywhere I went!
Special thanks to Anika for granting us access into the Vibiana and staying late just so we could get the shots that we needed. Our photos wouldn’t have been complete if it weren't for you! Thank You!

  3. Good for you for taking things into your own hands. You couldn't look any better and frankly I like the DIY version better than the gold dress.

  8. Beautiful!

If you're going to use your body form to make clothes, you'll want to have one with exactly the same measurements as your body, or at least pretty darn close. But I've looked. Petite body forms aren't the easiest to find, particularly adjustable ones (to make it more custom). If you don't really care about the size, you can find some at overstock.com. But the cheapest I've seen is probably stores that are closing or just getting rid of their mannequins.

  9. There is that beautiful dress you made.. it's gorgeous, Khatu... and so are the pictures... bu of course not as gorgeous as you....

Gawd, I've been wanting a dress form for ages, but it'll cost me $1600 to get it shipped from NYC. Wolf dress forms are around $800... but such a good investment. Plus, you can even get it customized to your own body! You can also check out etsy/ebay for dress forms!

  10. Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous! I didn't think anything could be prettier than Part 1 but the red dress and classic grey suit are really amazing. It's too bad you couldn't go with your first picks (location or dress) but that red dress suits you perfectly!

  12. Khatu, these beautiful photos leave me seriously speechless! You two look perfect together and the photographers did a beautiful (but still different) interpretation of the Carrie and Big photo. Looks like the second location worked out to your advantage!

Also that dress is amazing - even though the unfinished seam left thread everywhere, I actually like it... it keeps the dress from looking too perfect and adds a nice non-fussy touch.

Hope you're having a great week!

  31. I enjoyed having engagements taken. It was so fun! We had a budding photographer do them so she could add them to her portfolio. We've used them to create albums for the wedding, wedding decorations and even thank you post cards for all our showers! Also, when interviewing wedding photographers, we found most include engagements in the package deal!

  32. Your blog is one of the most stylish wedding blogs I have come across. You both, as a couple inspire my better half and me to dress well! I also must compliment you on the lovely pictures. The photographer has done a wonderful job out of it. They look dainty and colourful and are a delight to the eye.
