Wedding Wednesday: Photography Update

Thank you all for your recommendations on photographers. However, after an entire week of deliberation, Darren and I decided to go with Callaway Gable. Initially, we set a certain budget for photography, but after months of searching, we couldn’t find anyone to our liking. Ultimately we realized that the following must happen; search outside of Massachusetts, increase our budget, or settle. We were extremely close to settling, but luckily for us, our potential photog turned us down – probably thought that I was a bridezilla and got scared off. In any case, it happened for the better!
I know photography is not important to some, but it is for us. In the end, all you have left to remember are your photos. With that said, here are some helpful tips on how to search for a photographer.

Step 1: Know what you want. Know what attracts you, the style and look you're going for; modern, editorial, fashion, journalistic, rustic and etc. This will help filter and narrow down your search.

Step 2: Where to search. Theknot.com, Stylemepretty.com and Weddingwire.com are a few of the major wedding sites out there. Although these sites are useful, they may not have a full list of available photographers in your area. Of all the wedding photography sites, I really liked Bestofweddingphotography.com. Google was also extremely useful. I googled photographers that have worked at our venue in the past. This is a great way to envision what the venue will look like on the wedding day. Also a great way to see different angles of the venue through the eyes of various photographers.

Step 3: Make sure to check them out thoroughly! I never look at their portfolios, mainly because it's not always up-to-date and sometimes really deceiving. Great portfolios don't always equate to great work. I like to look at their blogs (if there is one). A photographer’s blog says a lot about them, and for me, it’s the deciding factor. You can get a better idea of their work, style, and progression. It is also a great way to gauge their talent based on their consistency. In addition to their blogs/portfolios make sure to look for reviews. See what other couples have to say about their work and or experience. This is EXTREMELY important because Darren's brother got married over 1 year ago and still have yet to see the photos - don't let this happen to you!

Step 4: Don't be afraid to negotiate. I found that most vendors are willing to work around your budget. Just be honest and tell them what you're working with.

Step 5: Ask a lot of questions! How many edits are included in each package? When to expect your photos? When to expect your album? When and if the CD of your digital negatives will be available? (Some will hold this for as long as a YEAR! Meaning you can't print your own pictures and must purchase through them). Duration of coverage(6, 8 or 10 hours)... and etc. Make a list of questions and make sure all your concerns are addressed.

Step 6: Book, relax and focus on the next thing on your to do list. :)
